Overview: In Burkina Faso, the major sources of mercury pollution are the mining (artisanal and industrial) and health sectors, cosmetic products and electrical equipment, such as neon lights and batteries. In 2007, UNEP developed a national inventory on mercury in Burkina Faso. The absence of reliable statistics has negatively affected the results, as indicated in the conclusion of the report.
