UNITAR has visited Freetown, Sierra Leone, for the official launch of the Minamata Initial Assessment and National Action Plan for Artisanal And Small Scale Gold Mining with the Sierra Leonean Environmental Protection Agency. The two-day inception workshop was designed to raise awareness among policy makers and the general public on the threats of mercury, and to mobilize the required infrastructure and support for national action.
The Workshop was attended by representatives (eighty in total) from parliament, government, industry, academia, NGOs and Civil Society, community leaders, Artisanal Small Scale Gold Miners, and others. In addition, the workshop had extensive press coverage (both print and electronic), which will help to communicate the message domestically.

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research is organizing a four-day training workshop on development of national mercury inventories. The workshop will be held from 9 to 12 May in Amman, Jordan. The training workshop is part of UNITAR's ongoing Minamata Initial Assessment project with the Republic of Yemen. The project is funded by Global Environment Facility and implemented by United Nations Industrial Development Organization. The participating countries are Yemen, Jordan and Macedonia. This capacity building training is first in a series of scheduled workshops organized by UNITAR to help countries in developing mercury inventories.
